Focus on... Mark Russell, eCommunications Manager

1. What is your role in the project?
As eCommunications Manager at ICE, I’m in charge of the content on the current website and making sure that all the information on the new website is well written, up-to-date and accessible to a wide range of readers. Along with our two web editors, Tor and Mark, I liaise with departments across ICE group to gather and edit content for the new site.
Our department is also in charge of the new site map, so we work to ensure that all pages are in logical, easy to find places, and additionally I work very closely with our web design agency to make sure that all the pages look good and contain all of the elements we need.

We also carry out training sessions for staff on how to write for the web and use the new content management system, and test new sections of the site as they are delivered by the development staff at TTL Ebusiness.

2. What does your average working day involve?
Aside from maintaining the current website, a typical day will involve lots of progress meetings with other members of staff to answer questions and see how they’re getting on with developing their new content, and reviewing new content for web suitability as it arrives from the web editors or other employees.

Every fortnight we meet with the web design agency and developers at Ebusiness to review technical progress on the site, and once a month we meet to get into the detail of how a new piece of functionality on the site is going to work. This tends to be followed up by lots of low level decisions about tweaks to presentation and interaction to make sure that the even the smallest features of the site are working as well and intuitively as possible.

I also present regularly on progress to various member groups at ICE to make sure they are aware of how the project is progressing.

3. Which other members of the team do you work closely with?
Everyone – I work very closely with the rest of the eCommunications team (of course), and I have daily catch up sessions with Julia, the project director, as well as regularly answering questions and providing feedback to the designers and developers.

4. What excites you most about the new website?
I think the new site design and concepts of personalisation, regionalisation and online communities are great, but what most excites me are the geeky bits that the users will not see. The new site is built on up to date technology, which means that once the site has gone live it will be much easier and quicker for us to develop new sections or bits of functionality. This provides us with plenty of opportunities to do bigger and better things in the future, which is fantastic.
